About R & D

The contribution of the construction industry to the growth of the economy is significant in most countries of the world and the Ethiopian construction industry is not an exception. Its five years (2006-2010EFY) average contribution to the GDP was around 13.7% and provided job opportunity for approximately 2.2 million workforces in 2010EFY. In addition, the industry currently produces, maintains, and adapts about 60% of fixed capital investment such as buildings, infrastructure which other economic activities depend on a great deal. Due to these extending influences, the construction industry has been the leading major growth driver of the economy.

Even though the contribution of the construction industry to the economy and society is significant, many studies have shown that the industry is behind its optimal performance. One of the main reasons for this is insufficient research and development (R&D) activities and innovation in the field.

The success of R&D activities depends on the availability of qualified staff and resources, the nature of internal and external communications, the strength of the coordination tasks, and the availability of feedback mechanisms. Amid the constraints in the requisite conditions for effective and efficient R&D Activities, however, ECPMI has been exerting a great deal of effort to identify and disseminate appropriate construction project management methodologies, to undertake benchmarking studies that facilitate the competitiveness of construction project delivery as well as to provide support to those involving in similar activities. Moreover, the institute has been conducting joint studies and research activities in collaboration with higher education institutions and assisted the strengthening of local research capacity across the sector.
